Best Mix Ever
I finished up a rap mix last week, which saw the likes of Naughty By Nature, Tupac, Biggie and friends. Now I am working on a non-rap best mix of all time. To give you an idea of a few songs, here are two that are definitely making the cut:
Temple of the Dog - Hunger Strike

Guns N Roses - November Rain

What other songs should I add?

Getting music advice from me is almost as bad as getting poker advice. Based on the small sample, I'm not really sure what theme you are going for. When I think of best songs, a few come to mind:
Hard Habit to Break - Chicago
Take 5 - Dave Brubeck
I Wish - Tuck Andress version
Hazy Shade of Winter - Bangles
It's not my fault - You asked!

Heh, listening to Temple takes me on a trip down memory lane... was dating a rock critic and playing in bands late 80's early 90's, so saw a ton of these guys play in nyc - soundgarden at CBGB (loudest show EVER - my ears are permanently damaged), Mudhoney - opened for Pearl Jam, Sebadoh opened for my band early on, Screaming Trees, Mother Love Bone... etc... good times. Heroin was a huge problem back then - saw way too many bands succumb to that evil shit.
Always hated GNR, waaaay too mainstream, but that's just me... Vedder was up on stage talking about how he wanted PJ to be GNR (this was one of their first shows), which turned me off PJ for a long time.
But - since this is YOUR mix, not mine, let's see what else you come up with :)
You need to have your ears sealed shut and your brain emptied of memories if you take DrC's advice. Yikes.
Those two songs as a start are quite excellent. I'd go with "Reign O'er Me" (Pearl Jam's or the Who). You are starting with two epic songs...dang this can be hard.
Try adding Stone Temple Pilots, more Who, any and all Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Collective Soul (maybe).
I usually just hit Genius in iTunes and go from there ;-)
FWIW - I totally agree with OhCaptain.
